Raising Visibility

Launching Families That Can

Situation:

As California public education faced severe budget cuts in 2008, it was feared that charter schools, although widely in demand but without a grassroots voice, would take a disproportionate budget hit.

Strategy:

Unite families from across the state. Together, show the tremendous support for charter schools and ensure that school district and the state treat charter school students fairly.

Solution:

The Larson Communications team:

  • Helped unite parents from more than 100 charter schools (over 10,000 parents).
  • Spearheaded the launch of the parent advocacy organization, “Families That Can.”
  • Organized a widely publicized march of more than 3,000 parents in downtown LA.

The result? Families That Can has been successful in preventing attempts to cut millions in facilities funding for charter schools and helped secure permanent facilities funds, with the average charter school receiving an additional $75,000 in facilities support.
